Millennium Dome Comes Out Ahead in Super Casino Race
The Millennium Dome came out on top in the ranking of the eight short listed proposed venues for Britain's first Las Vegas-style super casino.
The Dome is owned by Anschutz Entertainment Group, a Los Angeles, USA based firm that is owned in turn by the controversial Philip Anschutz.
Anschutz has been under close scrutiny because of his links to John Prescott, who was a guest at his Colorado home in the summer of 2005. Prescott has been accused of wielding influence to get key offices to side with the Dome.
Glasgow and Blackpool came out in second and third respectively in the list of the Casino Advisory Panel. A spokesperson for the Panel said that future rankings will not be affected by this first round of assessment.
The panel also released the announcement July 24 that it extended its deadline for submissions from local authorities that weren't able to make the shortlist. The Casino Advisory Panel said that it might add new venues to the shortlist based on the merit of the extra information provided.
The first round of judging conducted by the Casino Advisory Panel included the criteria social impact, need for regeneration, willingness to license, probability of implementation, regional context, community benefits, unique characteristics and range of areas.
